DEAN ANSELL
The earth is always wet, the ground is always moving presents an immersive installation by artist Dean Ansell. The new work explores the ephemeral and cylindrical nature of wind, landscape and transformation through Balawaian ancestral mythology. Bringing together suspended sculpture, light, engraved imagery and soundscape, Ansell creates an atmospheric encounter with the elemental forces of wind and the ways in which they shape and reform the landscape.
Dean Ansell is a multidisciplinary artist of Melanesian (Riḡorabana, Balawaia, Papua Niugini), Maltese, and Anglo-Celtic descent. Spanning installation, soundscape, and embodied performance, Ansell’s practice interprets Melanesian mythologies and rituals. Correlating inherited knowledge with his personal experiences of cultural displacement, Ansell’s work is an expression of the complexities of his Melanesian diasporic experience.
